Top Things You Should Know When Hiring A Home Moving Company

Edwin Howard

Are you in the process of moving from one home to another, and are interested in learning how to make the transition smoother? Then take the time to learn more about what key considerations must be made to avoid unforeseen problems during the move.

  • Reduced workload for moving crew: The more work that the movers have to complete on the moving day, the more money you will be charged for their services. Therefore, you must minimize the amount of work that the movers have to do. You can do that by packing all the stuff into boxes, and moving them by the roadside if it's a dry day. This will allow the movers to quickly transfer your personal belongings from the roadside to the truck. Also disassemble any furniture that can be flat packed. Movers can do this for you but it can be time consuming, and as a result a hefty amount might be added to the final bill.
  • Insurance coverage: It is important to plan for the worst so that you do not incur a lot of personal loss. Therefore, you must opt for an insurance option in the event that your personal belongings get damaged during the move. If it is just a few squashed boxes, then that probably won't be a problem for you. However, if the moving truck was to be in an accident where as a result all your personal items got destroyed, then that could be problematic for you.
  • Storage containers: You can rent storage containers, which the home moving company will leave, next to your home. They can then be filled up at your own pace, and taken away on moving day. Then at your new home, the storage containers can be left until you have removed your items. Just keep in mind that you must pay rent for every day that the container is in your care. This can get quite expensive if you don't give the container back for a few months.
  • Agree on the price: It is a good idea to agree on a price before the job starts. This will avoid any unpleasant extra charges that you didn't know you'll need to pay. Extra charges can come when the moving crew has to work beyond normal working hours in the evenings, or on the weekends. Also if you ask for certain things to be done such as the taking apart of furniture, then there could be an extra charge there. For your peace of mind explain what you want the moving company to do, and agree on a price before work begins.

About Me
The Life of a Military Family

Hello! My name is Maggie Thompson. My husband James has been in the military for our entire married life. We have two children; he was deployed at the time of both of their births. We have moved five times in nine years. James plans to remain in the military for many more years, and I know this means many more moves for us. I feel as if I’m becoming a professional in the area of moving. I've learned some very handy ways to pack, load trucks, and unpack. I’ve also learned how to pack a storage unit. You see, not every house we move into is the same size. A few times we haven’t been able to fit all of our belongings into a new home. Rather than sell them, we have stored them. I’m going to share some of my moving tips with you. Enjoy!
